The word “Chennai” has been coined a couple of years ago. Till then the city was called Madras. Even today people all over use both Chennai and Madras to denote this place. This fact does not sound to be an unknown one. However when it a stranger nears a phrase live Old Madras it might seem to be a mere description of this city in olden days Old Madras reflects an entirely different picture sans the advancements, bussing activity and crowd.
Old Chennai as in art
It a stranger were to look at the picture of Old Madras contained in the art work and the city today he will be petrified to note the differences. Unless the person is well used with the locality it will be possible to convince him that the picture is representation the city in yesteryears. This applies to anybody who has not been to Chennai but sources. Even if that person had seen some pictures. Even if that person has seen some pictures or Video clippings the result that the city has been completely ruined in the name of renovation and development.
What Old Madras was all about?
It takes more than to envy the way Chennai looked and existed in the past. Before comparing the feature to what it is today it becomes important to understand the critical issues facing mankind in the name of upliftment. One need not even confirm the fact that the city offered peace, health, hygiene and happiness tot he dwellers in those days than compared with the current scenario. It is not to deny that they are absent today. Their proportion has come down and there has been a drastic increase in the income generated. Is money the only measure of development in the modern world? No doubt education & opportunities needs to be given due importance but not at a cost like this.
More dimensions
Another gaze at the picture will reveal that people led a contended life in those days unlike the city dwellers today who stand staunch examples to selfishness and spoiling natural resources for the sake of monetary benefits no pictures and writings can bring back the glory of the city as no force in the world can think of taking it back. In fact neither is it possible nor is it practical to do so. This literary piece and pictorial depiction are not merely meant to be downpour of an artist’s feelings but also to make people reflect the best can be done.
The statues we see today in many important areas will show the mastery of the craftsman and the importance given to them in those days. some of the prominent status include that of bazzar police station and Kamaraj Salai and that at and ashram Bhashyam Iyengar a senior judge in the beginning of nineteenth century near Chennai High Court Bar Council Office.
Old Madras and today
The purpose for which these statutes are being used today and the quality of construction shows the true differences between “Old Madras” and the so-called Chennai. These status have becomes resting places or shelters for indecent activities in Public Moreover we find huge building constructed with poor or no quality. In addition statues are being used as a means to gain publicity and not to show respect or dignity for the person. The people who inaugurate or commemorate statues these days have their own vested interests. These statues are being poorly maintained and it is not pure if they will exist for a long time the attitudinal differences again count for the sorting of old and new Chennai.
Another interesting fact about old Chennai is that they were the first ever-British settlement in India. Apart from majestic construction the business activities, which flourished the East India Company, encouraged the Britishers to venture more into India. Historically this place occupies lot of prominence due to the above-mentioned fact. The way the city dose it’s identify makes one wonder if they will lose the importance place in history too. This might seem to be an exaggeration but there are ample chances for them to happen in reality given the trend in the city.
Conclusion
This presentation on Madras is not meant to make people dram and aim at attaining the impossible. It is an effort to show a glimpse of the past and the direction in which we are moving and thereby may a comparative analysis.

Prabhakaran’s story

Early life

Velupillai Prabhakaran was born in the northern coastal town of Velvettithurai on November 26, 1954, to Thiruvenkadam Velupillai and Vallipuram Parvathy.^[13]^[14] Angered by what he saw as discrimination against Tamil people by successive Sri Lankan governments, he joined the student group TIP during the standardization debates.^[15] In 1972 Prabhakaran founded the Tamil New Tigers (TNT)^[16] which was a successor to many earlier organizations that protested against the post-colonial political direction of the country, in which the minority Sri Lankan Tamils were pitted against the majority Sinhalese people.^{Political situation[›]}

In 1975, after becoming heavily involved in the Tamil movement, he carried out the first major political murder by a Tamil militant group, assassinating the mayor of Jaffna, Alfred Duraiappah, by shooting him at point-blank range when he was about to enter the Hindu temple at Ponnaalai. The assassination was in response to the 1974 Tamil conference incident, for which the Tamil radicals had blamed Duraiappah,^[17] because he backed the then ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He was also seen by Tamil militants as betraying the Tamil nationalist sentiments in the Jaffna Peninsula, by allying with the Sinhalese majority government.^[18]

Tamil Tigers

Founding of the LTTE

On May 5, 1976, the TNT was renamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), commonly known as the Tamil Tigers.^[19]

Religion is not a major factor in his philosophy or ideology, but the LTTE can be characterized as anti-Buddhist.^[20] The LTTE is also an organization that does not cite any material from religion or religious texts in any of its ideological documents and propaganda but are driven only by the idea of Sri Lankan Tamil nationalism and considers it as the only single-minded approach and inspiration towards the attainment of an independent Tamil Eelam.

Press conference at Killinochchi

Prabhakaran’s first and only major press conference was held in Killinochchi on April 10, 2002.^[21] It was reported that more than 200 journalists from the local and foreign media attended this event, and they had to go through a 10-hour security screening before the event^[21] in which Anton Balasinghamintroduced the LTTE leader as the “President and Prime minister of Tamil Eelam.”

A number of questions were asked about LTTE’s commitment towards the erstwhile peace process and Prabhakaran and Dr. Anton Balasingham jointly answered the questions.

Answering a question from one of the reporters Prabhakaran said that he has instructed the LTTE cadres to kill him if he compromised on the goal of independent state.^[21]

Repeated questions of his involvement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination were only answered in a sober note by both Balasingham and Prabhakaran. They called it a “tragic incident” (“Thunbiyal Chambavam”, as quoted in Tamil) and they requested the press “not to dig into an incident that happened 10 years ago.”

During the interview he stated that the right condition has not risen to give up the demand of Tamil Eelam. He further mentioned that “There are three fundamentals. That is Tamil homeland, Tamil nationality and Tamil right to self-determination. These are the fundamental demands of the Tamil people. Once these demands are accepted or a political solution is put forward by recognising these three fundamentals and our people are satisfied with the solutions we will consider giving up the demand for Eelam.” He further added that Tamil Eelam was not only the demand of the LTTE but also the demand of the Tamil people. ^[21]

Prabhakaran also answered a number of questions in which he reaffirmed their commitment towards peace process, quoted “We are sincerely committed to the peace process. It is because we are sincerely committed to peace that we continued a four month cessation of hostilities” and was also firm in de-proscription of the LTTE by Sri Lanka and India, “We want the government of India to lift the ban on the LTTE. We will raise the issue at the appropriate time.”

Prabhakaran also insisted firmly that only de-proscription would bring forth an amenable solution to the ongoing peace process mediated by Norway: “We have informed the government, we have told the Norwegians that de-proscription is a necessary condition for the commencements of talks.

Sri Lankan Tamil nationalism

Prabhakaran’s source of inspiration and direction is Sri Lankan Tamil nationalism.^{Sri Lankan Tamil Nationalism[›]} His stated and ultimate ideal is to get Tamil Eelam recognised as a nation as per the U.N. Charter that guarantees the right of a people to political independence^[25] which has been given in their official web page. The LTTE also proposed the formation of an Interim Self Governing Authority during Peace Negotiations in 2003. Former Tamil guerrilla and later turned politician Dharmalingam Sithadthan, has remarked that “his dedication to the cause of the Tamil Eelam was unquestionable, he was the only man in Sri Lanka who could decide if there should be war or peace.”^[24]

Militarism of the LTTE

Prabhakaran has explicitly stated that an armed struggle is the only way to resist asymmetric warfare, in which one side, that of the Sri Lankan government, is armed and the other comparatively unarmed. He argues that he chose military means only after observing that non–violent means have been ineffectual and obsolete, especially after the Thileepan incident. Thileepan, a colonel rank officer adopted Gandhian means to protest against the IPKF killings by staging a fast unto death from September 15, 1987, and by abstaining from food or water till 26 September, he died in front of thousands of Tamils who had come there to fast along with him. This further strengthened Prabhakaran’s resolve that peaceful protests would either be ignored or crushed but never heard.^[26]

Tactically, Prabhakaran perfected the recruitment and use of suicide bomber units, while his fighters usually took no prisoners, and were notorious for assaults that often left every single enemy soldier dead.^[24] Personally, Interpol described him as someone who was “very alert, known to use disguise, and capable of handling sophisticated weaponry and explosives.”^[24]

Modus operandi

Prabhakaran is widely reported to have operated in India, primarily in Tamil Nadu prior to 1990s.

Sri Lankan Army Commander Sarath Fonseka alleged that he has fled Sri Lanka to a foreign country subsequent to the run of Sri Lankan military victories in 2009.^[27] Malaysia‘s police force was put on alert on reports that he had either fled there or to Thailand.^[28]

Death

When the Sri Lankan military advanced into LTTE territory, Prabakaran and his top leadership retreated into Mullaithivu, which became the rebels’ last stronghold. Early reports indicated that Prabakaran was killed by rocket attack while trying to flee the conflict zone in a captured ambulance and his body was badly burnt. But after the pro-rebel Tamilnet claimed that he was alive, his body was shown on national TV. According to later reports, his body was found in the adjoining Nandikathal lagoon north of Vellamullivaikkal near Mullaithivu. Its identity was confirmed by Karuna Amman, his former confidant,^[29] Daya Master and by DNA testing against his son’s genetic material.^[30] Circumstantial evidence suggested that his death was caused by a massive head injury or he was shot dead at close range. There are also allegations that he was executed.^[31]

Criminal indictments

Velupillai Prabhakaran has been wanted by Interpol and many other organizations since 1991 for terrorism, murder, organized crime and terrorism conspiracy.^[8] He has been issued a death warrant^[32] by the Madras High Court in India for plotting the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in May, 1991 and in 2002 Judge Ambepitiya issued an open warrant to arrest him in connection with the 1996 Central Bank Bombing.^[33] The judge found him guilty on 51 counts and sentenced him to 200 years in prison.

Personal life

Little is known of Prabhakaran’s personal life, either from his interviews or from cited media sources, although it is widely known that he is married to Mathivathani Erambu on October 1, 1984.^[19] They have a daughter (Duwaraka) and two sons, Charles Anthony and Balachandran. Their whereabouts are not known, but it was widely believed that they are not in Sri Lanka.^[19] However, Sri Lanka military sources have stated that they have recovered the corpse of Charles Anthony. ^[34] A senior Sri Lankan minister later informed that the Sri Lanka Army found the bodies of Prabhakaran’s wife, Mathivathani, his older daughter, Duvaraka, and his 13-year old son, Balachandran^[35]. However the Military spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara later informed that there was no information about the whereabouts of the remaining members of the Prabhakaran family. “We have not found their bodies and have no information about them,” he said^[36].

Spelling of his name

There are different approaches to render his name in Latin script, which appear very different at first sight. The most straightforward option is a transliteration according to the National Library transliteration scheme. Given that the name is வேலுப்பிள்ளை பிரபாகரன் in Tamil, this yields Vēluppillai Pirapākaran. People unfamiliar with this transliteration model tend to mispronounce the name, which is why outside academia, a more phonetic rendering (a transcription) is often found. The pronunciation of the name is [ʋeːlʊppɨllaəppɨraːbaharan]. This is approximated in a spelling based on English conventions by “Pirapakaran”, “Pirapaharan” or “Pirabaharan”. A third option is to trace the history of the name back to its origins in Sanskrit, and then apply the National Library transliteration rules. This gives the version most often used in Western media, namely “Prabhakaran”.

prabhakaran’s death

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s state television station announced on Monday that Tamil Tiger rebel chief Velupillai Prabhakaran has been killed, and the army commander said the last pockets of rebel resistance have been cleared from the north.

Prabhakaran’s death would spell the end of a more than three-decade quest by the rebel leader for a separate state for minority Tamils across northern and eastern Sri Lanka. Rupavahini television, the state broadcaster, broke into its regular programming Monday afternoon to announce Prabakharan’s death. They gave no details of how he was killed. The government information department also sent a text message to cell phones across the country announcing Prabhakaran was killed along with his top deputies, who were known as Soosai and Pottu Amman.

Sri Lanka’s army chief, Lt. Gen. Sareth Fonseka, told television his troops routed the last rebels from the northern war zone Monday morning and were working to identify Prabhakaran’s body from among the dead. “We can announce very responsibly that we have liberated the whole country from terrorism,” he told state television.

Prabhakaran was in a small convoy of a van and ambulance along with several close aides which tried to drive out of the battle zone, but was attacked and killed, the senior defence ministry official said.

“He was killed with two others inside the vehicle. There will be a formal announcement later,” the official said on condition he not be named.
“When the troops opened fire, the van tried to get away, but it was also hit,” said another high-level source from the military. “The vehicle caught fire.”
The defence ministry said the rebels’ leadership was decimated, heralding an end to their decades-old battle to carve out an independent ethnic homeland in the north of the island.
Troops also found the bodies of Prabhakaran’s 24-year-old son Charles Anthony, the group’s political wing leader B. Nadesan, and the head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Peace Secretariat, S Pulideevan.
Also reportedly found dead were the LTTE’s police chief Ilango, its eastern leader, S Ramesh, and deputy intelligence chief Kapil Amman.

In a dramatic announcement, the guerrillas acknowledged Sunday that their decades-old battle for an independent ethnic homeland had reached its “bitter end” — signalling Asia’s longest running civil war was all but over.

The separatist rebels were once one of the world’s most feared guerrilla armies, and ran a de facto mini-state spanning a third of the island before the government began a major offensive two years ago.

“We have decided to silence our guns. Our only regrets are for the lives lost and that we could not hold out for longer,” Selvarasa Pathmanathan, the Tigers’ chief of international relations, said in a statement.

But his appeals for peace talks — rather than a surrender — were flatly rejected by the government, and the defence ministry said soldiers were being sent in to crush the diehard remnants and recapture “every inch of land.”

Sri Lanka’s hawkish president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, will open a new session of parliament on Tuesday with an address that will officially mark the ending of the war.
The conflict has left more than 70,000 dead from pitched battles, suicide attacks, bomb strikes and assassinations. The LTTE emerged in the 1970s, with all-out war breaking out in the early 1980s.

The capital Colombo, which has been frequently hit by Tiger suicide attacks over the past quarter century, saw street celebrations which lasted well into Sunday night.
Authorities have been determined to capture, kill or recover Prabhakaran’s body amid fears his escape may lead to an attempt to rebuild the LTTE and usher in a new cycle of violence.

The Sri Lankan government’s moment of triumph has also come at the cost of thousands of innocent lives lost in indiscriminate shelling, according to the United Nations. The UN’s rights body now wants a war crimes probe.
The International Committee of the Red Cross, the only neutral organisation that has been allowed to work in the war zone, has for its part described “an unimaginable humanitarian catastrophe.”

But Sri Lanka has shrugged off the international pressure.
“There was no bloodbath as some people feared,” human rights minister Mahinda Samarasinghe told reporters. “Everybody has come out safely and they are being looked after by the government.”

What is a tornado?
A tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. The most violent tornadoes are capable of tremendous destruction with wind speeds of up to 300 mph. They can destroy large buildings, uproot trees and hurl vehicles hundreds of yards. They can also drive straw into trees. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide to 50 miles long. In an average year, 1000 tornadoes are reported nationwide.

How do tornadoes form?
Most tornadoes form from thunderstorms. You need warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cool, dry air from Canada. When these two air masses meet, they create instability in the atmosphere. A change in wind direction and an increase in wind speed with increasing height creates an invisible, horizontal spinning effect in the lower atmosphere. Rising air within the updraft tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical. An area of rotation, 2-6 miles wide, now extends through much of the storm. Most strong and violent tornadoes form within this area of strong rotation.

What is a funnel cloud?
A funnel cloud is a rotating cone-shaped column of air extending downward from the base of a thunderstorm, but not touching the ground. When it reaches the ground it is called a tornado.

How do tornadoes stop?
It is not fully understood about how exactly tornadoes form, grow and die. Tornado researchers are still trying to solve the tornado puzzle, but for every piece that seems to fit they often uncover new pieces that need to be studied.

What is a supercell thunderstorm?
A supercell thunderstorm is a long-lived thunderstorm whose updrafts and downdrafts are in near balance. These storms have the greatest tendency to produce tornadoes that stay on the ground for long periods of time. Supercell thunderstorms can produce violent tornadoes with winds exceeding 200 mph.

What is a wall cloud?
A wall cloud is an abrupt lowering of a rain-free cumulonimbus base into a low-hanging accessory cloud. A wall cloud is usually situated in the southwest portion of the storm. A rotating wall cloud usually develops before tornadoes or funnel clouds.

What is a waterspout?
A waterspout is just a weak tornado that forms over water. They are most common along the Gulf Coast. Waterspouts can sometimes move inland, becoming tornadoes causing damage and injuries.

What is hail?
Hail is created when small water droplets are caught in the updraft of a thunderstorm. These water droplets are lifted higher and higher into the sky until they freeze into ice. Once they become heavy, they will start to fall. If the smaller hailstones get caught in the updraft again, they will get more water on them and get lifted higher in the sky and get bigger. Once they get lifted again, they freeze and fall. This happens over and over again until the hailstone is too heavy and then falls to the ground.

What is a gustnado?
A gustnado is a short-lived, relatively weak whirlwind that forms along a gust front. A gust front is the surge of very gusty winds at the leading edge of a thunderstorm’s outflow of air. Gustnadoes are not tornadoes. They do not connect with any cloud-base rotation. But because gustnadoes often have a spinning dust cloud at ground level, they are sometimes wrongly reported as tornadoes. Gustnadoes can do minor damage.

What is a landspout?
A landspout is a very weak tornado that is not associated with a wall cloud or a mesocyclone. It is the land equivalent of a waterspout.

When are tornadoes most likely to occur?
Tornadoes can happen at any time of the year and at any time of the day. In the southern states, peak tornado season is from March through May. Peak times for tornadoes in the northern states are during the summer. A few southern states have a second peak time for tornado outbreaks in the fall. Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Where are tornadoes most likely to occur?
The geography of the central part of the United States, known as the Great Plains, is suited to bring all of the ingredients together to forms tornadoes. More than 500 tornadoes typically occur in this area every year and is why it is commonly known as “Tornado Alley”.

Apple excess stay mum on jobs’s health

Apple executives offered no new information about the health of CEO Steve Jobs during the company’s first-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, which came as a report surfaced that U.S. regulators are reviewing Apple’s public statements about his medical issues.

Jobs said last week that he would take a leave of absence until the end of June for medical reasons. He said his condition is “more complex” than he thought when he revealed on Jan. 5 that his recent weight loss was the result of a hormone imbalance. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook is managing Apple’s day-to-day operations in Jobs’s absence.

“Steve is CEO of Apple and plans to remain involved in major strategic decisions, and Tim will be responsible for day-to-day” operations, Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO, said during Wednesday’s conference call, essentially repeating what the company said last week.

Asked whether he would take over permanently should Jobs become unable to do his job, Cook said a strong company culture at Apple means it could do well under many of the current executives.

“The values of our company are extremely well-entrenched. We believe we’re on the face of this earth to make great products, and that’s not changing,” he said. “Regardless of who is in what job, those values are so embedded in this company that Apple will do extremely well.”

Jobs had surgery in 2004 for pancreatic cancer. Last year, his gaunt appearance spurred rumors that the charismatic CEO might have had a recurrence of ill health. The intense speculation has generated debate over how much detail public companies should disclose about their leaders’ medical issues to shareholders.

According to a Bloomberg report Wednesday, the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission is examining Apple’s public statements about Jobs’ health to determine whether the company misled investors. The report, which cited an unnamed source “familiar with the matter,” said the review does not mean the SEC has seen evidence of wrongdoing. The SEC declined to comment on the report.

It is unclear how much detail others in the company know about Jobs’s condition, but he sought to reassure employees and shareholders that the board is behind him. “As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out,” he wrote in last week’s letter to employees. “Our board of directors fully supports this plan.”
